EyeTricks: Excuse me while I blow my mind.

eyetricks_hdr

eyetricks_icon_smallOptical illusions are fun, for me more than most.  I enjoy watching dots disappear or realizing that the color photo I am looking at is actually black and white, but not just for the novelty. I enjoy optical illusions for what they tell us about the way we see, think, and perceive the world.  I know, it's an unnecessarily high-brow way to begin this review, but this is why I enjoy these simple tricks.

Upon downloading EyeTricks by George Giaslas, I went through each illusion and tried them out.  I'd seen most of these tricks before, but not all of them.  Some worked better than others, but none were duds.  It only took me 15 minutes or so to go through the app, testing out these fun illusions, and then the fun was over.

"Great," I thought.  "Done with that one.  No need to keep it on my phone."  I reasoned that--while amusing--a simple website could have produced the same effect.  Having these on the iPhone seemed like a novelty.

However, there is another great way to use this app: mess with your friends' minds.  By having these illusions on your iPhone, you have them with you all the time.  I have pulled out my phone to show friends--young and old--different illusions, and I've blown them all away.

I think I'll keep it on my phone for a while.

eyetricks_3 The interface is well organized.

As for the way the app is put together, it is simple but adequate.  You can browse tricks and choose your favorites, and you can move between tricks via buttons on the built-in menu within each illusion. Another cool feature is the explanation and instructions that are displayed before the illusion comes up.  Very convenient, and it can be turned off in the settings menu once you have done a trick a few times.

I am a little disappointed with the number of tricks.  I've played with many more optical illusions, I know, and I would hope that the creators of this app could build a bigger library.  They're still on version 1.0, however, so maybe they will collect more illusions in the future.

Overall, EyeTricks a fun way to play with your eyes and your mind.  It's not going to revolutionize your world, but it's fun, it's free, and it's worth the time to download and share with others.

(Note: No illegal psycho-tropic substances were taken in the course of researching this review.  If you've got some, though, it'd probably get pretty trippy.  And awesome.  And you'd probably stare at your screen for hours on end with you're Keanu Reeve's "I know Kung-Fu" face on.  Not that I know.  Just sayin'.)
