News Apps Roundup: CBS doesn’t even have an app!

There are dozens of news apps and I am sure we will get around to reviewing many of them, but I didn’t want this series to go on forever, so I picked those I liked and knew about.

Heh, booty.

Which brings us to the non-existent CBS news app.  CBS has decided to go an alternate route.  When you try to visit www.cbsnews.com on your iPhone, you are automatically redirected to the CBS Mobile News site where everything is magically formatted for the iPhone.

It looks good, but the speed leaves something to be desired.  Also, space that is usually used in apps for navigation is taken up by safari buttons.

You can check weather and look at different categories of headlines, but there is not nearly as many headlines and stories as the AP Mobile News Network.  There is also a video section to pull videos from CBS’s feed.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work, and there are a lot of problems connecting with CBS’s server for video.

"Hey, did anyone see where I put down that bucket of blue pixels?"

A co-critic of mine claims this site is superior to all of the other apps, but I have to disagree.  There is something to be said for the ease of navigation that comes with the application-based apps, and I feel like the load time and reliability is not nearly where it should be on CBS’s site.  If you are a die-hard CBS fan, though, you could definitely do worse. [But how are you able to use an iPhone with your bifocals and mouth full of prunes? -ed.]  The site is well laid out and gives you access to most major news stories and a few cool extras.

So, overall, I am still sticking with the AP Mobile News Network application, and will check out the ABC News video feeds every once in a great while when I am bored.

Of course, there is also a New York Times app, Truveo, and countless others.  I remain open to my mind being blown by a truly bodacious news app in the near future.
