Say What!?!: Make your friends look (more) like idiots!

HAL9000 here with part two of our look at fun, goofy, inexpensive apps with which to amuse yourself for a number of minutes.
You know the crazy dumb animations you see all over the web and on TV shows like South Park? You know, the ones where the animators just cut up a picture and make the mouth move up and down? Well, the idea behind Say What!?! by Marmot Kilt Software is to let you do your own amateur animating…to your own pictures.
That’s right. For the low low price of only $0.99, you can obtain the ability to muck with pictures of anyone you manage to put into your photo album. After taking a couple of moments to define the area of their mouth, you can play a number of pre-recorded audio clips. And the mouth moves in perfect, crudely animated sync.
Which is pretty fun, funny, and cool. There are a few quotes on here (like the sounds of a man making cat meows) that serve as a great way to mock friends. Have just-woke-up or uber-drunk blackmail pics of a buddy? Taunt your friend by having the horrid image say things like “Hey, give me that taco. I need that taco!”
Come on. That’s got to make you giggle a little right? If not, this definitely isn’t the app for you.
Unfortunately, the number of good lines is limited. I’ve found some “Caddyshack” lines and a “Superbad” and “Terminator” reference, but all-in-all there are really only a handful of clips.
And the clips that are there are pretty poorly produced. It sounds like the same guy recorded on a laptop microphone.
So thank God for the “record” function. That’s right, you can use the iPhone’s microphone and record your own horrible, mean, mocking sound clips…which will sync up (surprisingly well) with an on-the-fly mouth animation that the program creates. So you can create animations of your friends calling themselves all sorts of funny names.
Like a picture or a sound? Rename it and save it for later.
The interface could stand to be spiffed up a bit, but that’s a nitpick. Really, if these guys could flesh out their audio library–maybe track down the rights to some ACTUAL movie clips–the app would take a huge leap forward. But the “record” feature really is the saving grace.
All told, though, I have now mocked multiple people with this thing. They all react differently–some getting annoyed, some being confused, and some just laughing along. But there is always a level of amusement.
There are far worse ways to blow a measly $.99. Let’s just hope this one gets updated with some new and professional sound clips. I sure would like to be able to animate my buddies saying my favorite lines from “Kindergarten Cop.”
“IT’S NOT A TUMOR!!!”
