Orbit – Pretty, pretty colors.

Orbit_HDROrbit_ICNLet me preface this review by saying, I am no astrologer and I’m not into cosmology as a passionate past time. I enjoy astronomy strictly as a casual observer. I can point out the Big and Little Dippers, and little else. Ok, nothing else, save the North Star…sometimes. This, even though I took an astronomy class in college. You’d think for that kinda dough I’d retain a little something, but, alas …

So, give me a little latitude in what I am about to say, all right?

Pic 1Orbit, by RunSwimFly, (developers of Gloop and Gloop Lite) is a neat little app in that it has pretty colors that can be manilpulated by touching your iPhone or iPod Touch screen, which acts as a gravitational pull for the “stars.” But, it got old kinda quick and then I was like, “Huh? What now?”

Looks like a flame licking the ceiling, right? Anybody?

Again, it was novel for about 2 minutes, but then the most fun I had with it was catapulting all the colored dots into the corner and seeing how they resembled a flame licking the ceiling of a dark room. That … was … awesome! (would this be because my major in college was Criminal Justice Administration where I took every class I could fit in my schedule that had to to with criminal arson and violent crime?)

My finger exerted gravitational pull in the center for this effect.

Orbit is supposed to look like a galaxy. Galaxies are made up of stars (little twinkly dots in the dark sky) and areas of particles that look like dust clouds. With nary a twinkle or dust cloud-ish area, it just looked like little blobs of color to me. I did enjoy swirling my finger to make rings, holding my finger in the center of the screen to “attract” all the stars in the galaxy to my fingertip and otherwise entertaining myself with the colors twirling and blending together.

I can’t help it. I’m a junkie who needs her fix of true crime documentaries and fictional criminal drama. I usually only watch space or astrology related shows if I stumble across them or my husband has one one. And then I’m interested, really I am. It just doesn’t stick for very long.

This one resembles a galaxy ... I think?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not knocking Orbit, or RunSwimFly, either. I like the app and will fiddle with it from time to time. And there are bound to be astrology buffs out there who will leave me some less than glowing comments. I apologize, in advance, for any feathers ruffled and humbly beg pardon. If I’m truly missing something, please feel free to leave a comment to help me out. You won’t hurt my feelings, promise!

By all means, give Orbit a try. It’s compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch (running OS 3.0 or later) and for 99 cents it won’t break the bank and will entertain you for awhile. Maybe for the simpletons, like myself, the developers will consider throwing a few twinkly dots in there or a few little blobs that look like dust clouds? I will keep checking for updates and in the meantime will enjoy Orbit in the same casual manner I enjoy all astrology-related media.

Please, for future reference: astronomy astrology. To be clear, astronomy > astrology (by many orders of magnitude).

HTML protection code stripped out my ‘not equal to’ marks: that should read ‘astronomy [is not equal to] astrology’. (A ‘preview’ buton would be nice…?)
