Backgrounds: It’s a collection of…backgrounds.

I don’t even know that I should review this. It’s a free app. Its name says it all. But it’s a Saturday and a lot of people love this app, so I figured I’d give it a go.Backgrounds by Stylem Media is a simple app that provides dozens upon dozens of really pretty pictures for people to push to their phone. From movies to models to comics to jokes, they have it all. Right now, my background image is that of a cracked iPhone home screen. Ain’t I clever.
When you open the app, you are taken to a four-across view of pretty pictures. You can sort through them by Popular, Recent, and Category.
The category list is the most useful for all us people who want to be unique individuals (just like everyone else). In it you will see a list of dozens of categories from Funny to Mountains to Thanksgiving.
It’s well organized but there is one thing that bugs the poop out of me; the categories are randomly organized. Were they listed alphabetically, I could go straight to the “Movies” section and find my favorite “Evil Dead” poster, but, alas, finding that perfect category is a little more difficult.
Once you find a picture you like, select “save” and the app downloads the image and puts it in your camera roll where you can make it your…
…that’s right…BACKGROUND!
Which brings me to a gripe…not about the app, really, but about the concept. Your background is up on your phone what, .07 seconds before you slide to unlock? Unless you are obsessed with checking the date or time on your phone, you barely see it. I even forget what my background image is sometimes. It seems a bit of a waste.
But the app works great. Not to mention the fact that you can find images you like and save them to your computer or email them to friends. ”Pictures” would be a better name for the app, but I guess “Backgrounds” is a little snappier.
Now if you will excuse me, I have found a nice picture that I must set as my background RIGHT NOW. Famke Janssen…rawr.
