This application is going to be filed under goofy, novelty prank apps.  Which is a shame, because it’s actually useful.

The idea is that you can record audio, cut it up into pieces and rearrange it into embarrassing statements.  You can then share this file via email and a slew of social applications.

It’s great for joking around, sure, but what about recording scotch tracks for videos?  Making voice memos and arranging your stream-of-consciousness babbling into some coherent thought?  Yep, it will work for that too.  It’s easy to use and simple in its execution.  Not to mention that the design and interface are fairly easy on the eyes.

I’m not a true believer in horoscopes. While their “wisdom” can be helpful for everyday life, I usually ascribe their value to coincidences or subconscious projections and not to the relative positions of the planets and stars.

Still, I like to have a couple of horoscope apps handy for amusement with friends. Up until now I was all about iScopes, but I decided to give Horoscopes and Tarot a try. The verdict? While the app does have some cool features (like automated Tarot readings), the horoscopes, themselves, are pretty damn cheesy and limited.

The interface is great and the content is okay, but I doubt this will become anything more than a novelty.  With other horoscope apps I can get detailed readings or horoscopes specific to every conceivable facet of my life…this one just doesn’t hack it.  But at least it’s free.

Enter ReelDirector, not only does it allow you to edit multiple videos together, this app also allows you to add transitions from shot to shot. You can non-destructively trim your clips and add text to your finished creation as well. The interface is smart and very easy to use and works both in portrait and landscape modes. Once you have set up your edit, simply hit create and you’re ready to send your masterpiece to friends and family.

The only features that I feel missing is the inability to add music or a narration and the ability to do some crude color correction. I’m hoping the folks at Nexvio will include some kind of music import and color correction in a future update.

What can I say about ReelDirector? It’s a VERY powerful application that allows to edit your videos together without ever leaving your iPhone. I HIGHLY recommend this application.

I’m fairly new to twitter. To be honest, I’ve always been a bit of a facebook kind of guy. Lately, though, I’ve come to admire twitter’s simplicity and versatility. The service cuts out a lot of bells and whistles and instead gives users control.

And there are a lot of ways to harness the power of twitter. On the iPhone, one of the best twitter clients is called Tweetie 2, a paid update to the original Tweetie application. While there are a couple of features missing (where’s the multiple group option??), it still gives users great control over their tweets on the go.

I love the ability to respond to people via the @ feature, the ability to look at direct messages, and, more than anything, the ability to add multiple twitter accounts that can easily be navigated from the home screen.

Why oh why do we need another tip calculator on the iTunes store? I mean, we already have, what, eight of the things?

That’s what I was thinking when I downloaded Tipulator, but once I launched the app, all my doubts were washed away. This is hands-down the best tipping application on the iTunes store, offering a number of features I would never have even thought of.

The interface is spiffy, the controls are easy to use, and the features are just what you’d want in a tip calculator, but without any unnecessary and over-bloated bells and whistles.

Now, for what it does this one is a little pricey at $1.99, but if you are obsessed with avoiding math at restaurants, it’s a must have.

There’s nothing like being in a store and wondering if you can get a particular product cheaper elsewhere. Just line up your barcode with your iPhone and POOF!, Redlaser recognizes the product and will search online for the cheapest price. I know people might shy away from the $1.99 price tag of this app, but I’m telling you, you’ll save at least that the first time you use this app. The bottom line is if you like saving money this app is for you.

Enter BlogPress. It’s got support for almost every major blogging service and most importantly, YouTube and Picasa support. BlogPress is fast and makes blogging on the go VERY easy. You want to include a recorded movie on your blog? Just insert your movie from your camera roll and BlogPress will automatically upload it to YouTube and embed it for you. VERY NICE. BlogPress has label and tag support as well as category support. Another cool feature is that BlogPress will autosave if you are interrupted by a call. Nice.

The only drawback that I have found, is the inability to add links to text, hopefully CLT Studio will address this in a future update. If you want to blog on the go quickly and easily, I highly recommend BlogPress. It’s only $2.99 and it will save you a TON of frustration blogging on the go.

Snapture was one of those Apps. The ease of use, the ability to zoom and the burst mode had me sold. The Application was so easy to use and so user friendly it seemed Apple-like. For some reason, Apple didn’t want it on the store. But, I guess after a little Apple vs. Google vs. AT&T press, you start letting some once questionable Apps show up on the store.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found Snapture on the iTunes App Store. Finally!! I quickly downloaded it and It’s now my camera of choice. Why? Well for starters you have a digital zoom. It’s really easy, just pinch and pull. We’ve all taken an action picture only for it to be blurry… The burst-mode really helps with this, by taking 3 quick pictures. Chances are, ONE of those pictures will be perfect. The quickview is nice and so is the ability to email FULL RESOLUTION files.

These are just some of the features that makes Snapture my favorite camera application. The price is reasonable, only $1.99. If you have an iPhone and you LOVE to snap pictures, this App is a must have.

Every now and then a free App comes along that either blows away the paid competitor or adds features the paid competitor never thought of. Well, Discover is one of those Apps. It satisfies our App addiction at no cost.

Discover is an ad supported Wi-Fi flash drive that’s VERY similar to Air Sharing, except it’s FREE. Discover is easy to set up and REAL easy to transfer files from you computer’s browser to your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The BEST feature of Discover is the ability to copy files from iPhone to iPhone with the “Nearby” feature. It works flawlessly and you can even password protect your file listings. I think we’ll be using the “Nearby” feature a lot here at TapCritic. Discover has MobileMe integration and another cool thing is the ability to playback 720p H.264 Quicktimes that have been copied to your iPhone via a web browser.

So do yourself a favor, save $5 and have lunch on us and download Discover for FREE. It will still satisfy your App addiction.

Well, not really, but it sure does zap the memory your phone is using, making the device run a lot smoother.

The app is called Memory Sweep, and it’s available as a free download from the iTunes store.

Don’t look for any bells and whistles on this one.  The definition of a focused app, Memory Sweep has literally two buttons.  The first clears up fifteen megs of memory on your phone, and the second clears up thirty.

(The developer says that it’s “not recommended” to clear up more than that, so we have no idea the carnage that could ensue if you made a version of this app that cleared up fifty insane megs of precious processing memory.)

For someone who reviews iPhone apps constantly and is always downloading, deleting, and installing the latest third-party apps from the iTunes store, this is a great app.  From what I can tell, it really does make the phone run more smoothly and limits the amount of in-app crashing.

Now it’s not perfect.  I’ve still had apps crash since using it, and the phone even froze up entirely one time, requiring a restart, but I have noticed a significant difference in some processor-heavy apps that would previously crash my system every other launch.

In addition, the app also gives you a list of all the processes that are running on your phone at one time.  You can’t interact with them or close specific systems (which is probably a good thing since I have no clue what most of them are), but it’s good to at least know what’s going on.

This is a great option for those of us who have decided to wait to upgrade our 3G phones to 3GS.  And for free, there’s really no reason not to throw this on the phone and see if it works for you.

I know, I also thought I’d never review an app titled “Run Pee”. But let me tell you something: if you love going to the movies, you will love this app. We’ve all gone to the theater after a dinner full of too much diet coke or maybe some margarita’s or perhaps we are draggin’ the kids along to go see the newest Pixar movie.

Nature calls and BOOM! You miss the scene when Darth Vader tells Luke he is his father OR your son decides it’s time to do a #2 and you miss the most important part in UP!

Well, Run Pee tells you the best time during a movie to either use the bathroom or pick up some more twizzlers. It’s a genius app and it makes sure that you don’t miss any important plot lines while you’re emptying your bladder or picking up some more nachos for the wife or kids. The menu layout is smart and the movie listings are always up to date. It gives you the EXACT times and audio cues to go do your duty. The other cool thing is Run Pee will also tell you if you should stick around for the credits or not. I know way to many people that missed out on the kick-butt ending of Iron Man.

So, do yourself a favor.  If you love movies and have .99¢, check out Run Pee. It’s less baggy then wearing an adult diaper.

Really, I cant stop. These Mafia Type MMORPGs got me hooked.  My new favorite is Epic Pet Wars by Miraphonic. It’s so good I cleared up some screen real estate.

Epic Pet Wars uses the same core model as all the time based MMORPGs but really pushes it in new directions.  Right from the start you can tell this one is going to be different.  The first thing you do is pick out your pet.  Each one has different characteristics that make the game seem a lot more personal. You can also have multiple pets, which is a huge difference!  When you are low on energy or hit points or whatever, you can just load up another one of your pets and keep playing instead of having to put the game down to let everything build back up. The developers really have reduced game lag without causing any major balance problems.

Epic Pet Wars has the best fighting system I’ve seen.  The fights are a lot more interactive. Items can be used during the battle that can really change the outcome. Again, Miraphonic reduced game downtime, because the fighting system is not time based.  You can battle as often as you like,  you might just have to eat a few Swag Cakes to rebuild your hit points before your next fight.  Looks like they are adding spells in the next update too.

The overall style of game is also very appealing to me.  You can make fun of me, but I was starting to get tired of “Taking Out an Official.”  The pets, items, and types of training all seem a little bit more positive, making the game-play  more enjoyable.

There is an achievement system that tracks milestones in the game, too.  None of the competition has pulled this off yet.  We all know how the kiddos like the achievement systems nowadays.

Epic Pet Wars is also extremely connected. You can play while on Facebook, or directly at www.epicpetwars.com.  The developers  use twitter all the time to communicate with their users.  Being able to directly speak and get help from a responsive developer is great.  They also sneak in treasure codes that unlock unique items all the time.

My only complaint about the game is the stupid pop up you get when you first launch it.  I understand its free, and they want you to buy the upgrades.  But really this game will sell itself, it’s that good.  Just please quit nagging me, your interface design is too nice, to be interrupted with the pop up.

Epic Pet Wars has turned out to be the best MMORPG out there.  Multiple pets, unlimited battling, achievements, and a connected developer make this game a must have.

BulkPix calls The Hysteria Project an Interactive Movie and it is an interesting concept for the iPhone. It reminds me a lot like the games on the Sega CD, but updated enough to work on the iPhone. Like the Sega CD, once you have finished the game, I don’t know if you’ll play it again. Because you’ll know the exact path to win it again. The game is genuinely creepy and has its moments. It reminds me a lot of a cross between The Blair Witch Project and Saw.

The interesting thing is, BulkPix is saying this title will become more of  an episodic title. This would make this concept more interesting and allow it to have more longevity. So, it’s definitely an interesting concept and it’s really creepy. We’ll just have to see if the $1.99 episodic, horror and choose your adventure genre works on the iPhone.

Where’s that ONE App that will allow me to create or edit word documents and spreadsheets?

Where?!

Well, now that ONE App exists and while it has a few minor shortcomings, Quickoffice Mobile Suite IS the definitive office suite for the iPhone. So what does it do? Well, for one it’s a word processor, but I’m not going to stop there. It’s a spreadsheet program, a wi-fi mobile drive and the first time you browse your files on your iDisk, you’ll wonder why Apple has never included that feature in the core of the iPhone OS.

I can’t speak more highly of Quickoffice, the word proccessor works like it should on the iPhone. The spreadsheet program is fast and you’ll will never think twice about giving estimates out of office, you’ll just launch Quickoffice. The iDisk integration is VERY elegant and trasparent. Plus, you get the added bonus of the wi-fi mobile drive that allows you to upload and download files via a web browser.

So what are the shortcomings? Well, the word processor is lacking a spell check. That’s a biggie. Hopefully Quickoffice will include that in an update. Predictive text also does not work in Quickoffice. My last gripe? The double-space doesn’t add a period. With the predictive text and double-space I can fly on the iPhone keyboard, without it, I’m like Superman to Kryptonite.

Should this steer you away from Quickoffice?

No.

Quickoffice does so many other things so well, it’s worth the $20. The first time you edit a document off your iDisk in the middle of nowhere, you’ll understand the power of Quickoffice.

But you aren’t limited to spewing your thoughts just when around a laptop or PC.  No, now you can take your ramblings on the road with WordPress for the iPhone from Automattic, Inc.

Now, up until today I was ready to hack this app to pieces (review wise) due to a few quirks that made it all but unusable for me, but lo and behold, there has been a WordPress update, and it fixed a few of my bigger issues.

So, for the uninitiated, what is WordPress?  It’s blogging software that allows you to post articles quickly and easily.  You set up a WordPress theme and program the site to handle your content however you’d like, then you log into your WordPress account and go.  All you have to do it worry about writing content and your fancy WordPress setup publishes the articles and makes sure they are formatted correctly, filed correctly, and managed correctly.

Using the WordPress web login on the phone, though, is almost impossible.  Now there is this app for easy, quick blogging on the go.

Now, it should be noted that this is for quick, simple posts.  If your blog is fancy with lots of pictures, “more” tags, excerpts and custom images, then this iPhone app will only take you so far.  Even for a site like TapCritic, though, this app has its uses.

Setting up your accounts is simple and easy, and you can set up multiple different sites as long as you have a WordPress install on all your servers.

Once you are into the app, you will see the past ten posts on the site.  Now you can go in and change them just like on a real computer.  You can change titles and categories and tags and even the publish date.  Nice.

There are a few things missing though.  If your site is excerpt dependent, this won’t work for you.  Also, you can’t look at things in both HTML and visual mode–it’s all HTML.  I would love to have a toggle switch to move between the two.

You can also create a post from scratch.  If you want to do fancy things like insert a “more” tag, which most blogs use heavily, you will need to study up on your HTML.  A bunch of other features are missing, too.  I would love to see an update in the future that allows more complicated coding without needing to know HTML.  Maybe just a pop-up menu with a wheel of options?  I’ve seen it done on other apps handling complicated interfaces.

One cool thing, though, is that you CAN add images from your photo library.  Wanna pull an image from a site?  You better have your HTML ready and a pen to write down the URL.  Jesus, I’ll be glad when we get the 3.0 software on these phones with cut-and-paste functionality.

The images, though, are not as customizable as on the original site.  You can’t change justification or even choose placement within the article.  All images are inserted at the bottom of an article.

Like I said, this is for simple blog sites…text only or non-image dependent.  This means its all but impossible for me to do an entire TapCritic post through this app.  So what is it good for?  Well, two things.

First, if you are a news oriented site it’s a great way to quickly upload news stories.  You can even add a picture at the bottom of the post to show what you’re talking about.  This is pretty neat if you’re blogging about a conference or press-related event.

Also, this app is GREAT for fixing typos.  Say you can’t remember if you referenced the right app developer in your app review.  You’re at a bar and it’s driving you crazy.  Pull this bad boy out and double check.  Change any problems you find on the spot.

Then everyone laughs at you for playing with your iPhone in a bar.  Small price to pay.

Overall, this app is pretty darn good and on its way to being great.  If they can figure out how to squeeze in a few more features and formatting options, this will change the face of modern blogging.

Oh, and did I mention the preview button?  That’s right.  Live previews of your post over 3G and edge.  A life saver.

Well, iRock…that is, if you are a very specific kind of user.

iRock is an iPhone virtual amplifier.  More than that, it allows users to run their voices or drums or guitars through effects to get a specific sound.

The result is an application that, through the use of microphones or direct inputs, alters, amplifies, and outputs your music.  That’s actually not bad for $16.99.

The application comes with a list of seven presets to choose from.  Once these presets are loaded, they can be changed and stored as new presets.  Or you can build a preset from scratch by going into the FX tab.  In here you will find a surprisingly professional-oriented list of options including delay times and styles, feedback rates, LFO depth, and a bunch of things I don’t have the slightest clue about, but I can tell that if you are a hardcore music guy/gal, you’ll probably take one look and scream out “Neat-O!”

But this isn’t worth $16.99.  There are other similar apps that allow you to change and amplify music and to output it via speakers (the suggestion on this is to use a dock and output through the line out…good idea for an impromptu amp).  What makes this better than other apps, though, it the ability to record and manipulate your tracks.

You heard me right.  With a simple click, the iPhone app records whatever you input to it, effects and all.  And how can you work with your music files?  The app works as a server that you can connect to on a mac and PC to download the song.

Not only that, but you can import the sound file as a .caf file which will open in ProTools so you can play with it, add to it, and manipulate it ad infinitum.

So it kind of doubles as a cheapo recording studio with digital effects built in.

“Neat-O!”

I got this, to be honest, out of sheer curiosity about the cost of the app.  I do play guitar, but it’s a leisure/time wasting kind of thing, and I’m not very good or knowledgeable.  So take everything I am saying with a grain of salt.

I wouldn’t get this unless you already know what you are going to do with it.  Also, know that Mark’s Recording Studios offers a lite, $.99 version of the app.  So if you just want something to play with, go that route.

But if you’re serious about your music, grab the full version of this baby and start playing music through your sound system.  Pretend to be the badass you so desperately want others to think you are.

While I was looking for some photography apps last week, I stumbled across iCam. I’m glad I did.

iCam by SKJM, allows you to monitor up to FOUR streaming sources from either your computer’s built in camera or an external USB or DV camera, right on your phone.

The interface is fast and streams work great even over edge.

Why would you want to do this?

Let’s say you’re out of town and and you would like to monitor your home while you’re away or perhaps you have a newborn and you want to keep an eye on them while they are napping.

Whatever the need, iCam monitors up to FOUR real-time sources right on your iPhone. It’s VERY easy to setup. All you have to do is install a host app on either your Mac or PC and then select a login and password.

That’s it! No firewalls or nothing else to setup. It’s as easy to setup as HP iPrint.

Once you have launched the iCam app on your phone you’ll see up to FOUR real-time streams. When you touch one of the streams it will go full-frame, simply touch the full-frame stream to go to the FOUR stream view. The interface is fast and the quality of streams are incredible even when viewing over edge.

My 10 year-old could set this up.

Currently, version 1.0.4 doesn’t support sound, but the developer states that the next update will. Once that happens, I guarantee Mr. Pence will be hooking up his cable box to his PC so he can watch ESPN on the road.

So, if you have a couple of computers laying around the house and you want a low-cost surveillance system, this is your app. It’s super easy to setup and with the developer promising audio support on the next update it will open a whole new way of watching live content. Even though it cost $4.99, I still HIGHLY recommend this program.
