100_iconMrs. Pence is at it again. She demanded to review 100 + Great books and when Momma’s not happy, nobody is happy.

So here’s Mrs. Pences’s review of 100+ Great Books.

100+ Great Books for Ten Bucks is a STEAL at $9.99. BeamItDown Software has just become my all-time favorite iPhone app developer. I love to read, but it’s not always convenient to lug around a book with all the various paraphernalia that my kids’ educational and extra-curricular activities require. Now when I’m somewhere that carrying a book would be cumbersome, I don’t have to sacrifice my love of reading. I always have my iPhone everywhere I go, and now with the 100+ Great Books app, I can carry a limitless selection of literature to access no matter where I may be.

You can either tilt or tap to navigate through your book.

You can either tilt or tap to navigate through your book.

This app utilizes the BeamItDown iFlow Reader that scrolls text — tilt away from you to increase the speed of the scroll, tilt toward you to slow the speed. If you don’t want to use the scrolling text, you can turn the feature off and just tap the screen at the top to page back or the bottom to page forward. I have been using another reader that you swipe your finger across the screen to turn the page, which makes it feel more like a real book, but there’s so much to like about the iFlow Reader that I think either style suits me fine.

The menu bar at the bottom of the screen allows you to choose a book, skip to a specific chapter within that book, or personalize the style or color font and color of the “paper” the text is displayed on. You have the choice of 23 font styles, 23 font colors & 26 paper colors. When you’re finished choosing your book and customizing how you want the text to be displayed, double tap the screen to exit Full Screen Mode and hide the menu bar. Another feature I like, it saves your place in every book you read, even if you’re reading multiple titles simultaneously.

Ahhh, it is the best of times.

At the bottom of the book selection screen is a link to see other titles available from BeamItDown, several of which are free to download. You can search “BeamItDown Software” in the App Store to see a complete list of the 50+ titles available for download in the App Store, many of which are collections of works by a single author. Most other titles were listed at either 99 cents or $1.99.

You get 110 works of literature, nope scratch that. While I was busy writing this already glowing review, I noticed there’s already a new update adding the Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe to the app — and the update’s Free! NICE!!! The books are shown in list form with no cover art—that’s about the only thing I can think of that might be addressed in a future update, in my opinion. But, still no big deal if it doesn’t happen.

Font selection is a breeze.

There are a lot of classic novels by notable authors such as Jane Austen (Pride & Prejudice), Charles Dickens (A Tale of Two Cities), Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter), Jules Verne (Journey to the Center of the Earth), H.G. Wells (The Time Machine) and the Bronte sisters, among many, many others.

You can read Hans Christian Anderson or the Grimm Brothers fairy tales or perhaps Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland to your kids. Want a tale of mystery and intrigue? Try reading Agatha Christie, Thomas Hardy, Jack London or Stephen Crane. In the mood for heavier reading material? Try one of the many political or philosophical titles from Plato, Thomas Hobbes, Homer, Immanuel Kant, John Locke or Alexander Hamilton and James Madison among others.

Customization of colors and fonts make this Mrs. Pence favorite readers.

I’m sorry.

Does it seem like I’m dropping names like I know these people?

Well, that’s because every author represented in this collection is a name everyone should know! The literary works and famous authors are too numerous to list, but very impressive. There is truly something for everyone here!

This is a must have for everyone! And it only takes up less than one quarter of one percent of the storage space on an 8Gb iPhone or iPod Touch. Read all the classic literature you could ever want here — fast easy, & inexpensive! No more excuses!
