QB Pass Attack: Put balls through holes by flicking your finger.

qb_icon_smallSports are not my strong suit.  I played basketball when I was a kid.  It was in a school where every boy played basketball, so there was really no other option.

But–despite my freakishly tall nature–I lacked coordination, speed, and any ability to not screw things up.  My basketball obsessed “friends” began hating me, and I ate alone at lunch a lot.

So when I got the opportunity to review a sports application, I hesitated.  But it’s time to get back on the horse, and although QB Pass Attack by Skyworks involves no more physical activity than flicking your finger, I am still terrible at it.  But it’s pretty fun and addictive, even if the options and add-ons leave a little to be desired.

The gameplay is fun, and the controls for throwing the ball are super sensitive.  It’s very difficult to “master” the throws, especially when aiming for the top circle.

Where's a muted trumpet when you need it? Oh, here it is: Waah-waaaaah.

I am also a fan of the two different modes, “Classic” and “Progressive”.  While Classic involves little more than racking up points, Progressive gives you more of a goal, watching yourself progress toward the end zone.

The question must be asked, though: why does this game have you throw a ball at a virtual canvas with holes in it (meant to simulate a football field) when it could easily put you on an actual virtual football field throwing to an actual virtual receiver?  To be honest, though, I enjoy the charm of mimicking a retro game, and this app is not about graphics but about gameplay.

I would like to see a few different options for backgrounds…maybe a background with more than two holes, or off-center holes.  Also, a multi-player mode over a wifi network (which lets you panic as you see your opponent’s score progress) would be a lot of fun.

Overall, it’s enjoyable enough to warrant spending a couple of dollars, but I think these developers could push it a little further.
